Iowa and Lafayette - Uplands East
Uplands East is an approximately 60 turbine project with turbines reaching over 600 feet. The land where the developer is looking to place turbines in the Driftless is karst geology. Karst is particularly susceptible to contamination due to its shallow soil and porous limestone. The area is covered with hundreds of document and undocumented lead mines. Contamination to aquifers could reach wells in hours.
Particularly absurd with this project is the proximity to Yellowstone Lake State Park and Wildlife Area with proposed turbines being less than 900 feet from these protected lands. Speaking of protected, nearly the entire project area in Lafayette County is labeled by the DNR as an avoidance area, due to the presence of protected bats, Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, and migratory birds.
